Professor Evangelos Raftopoulos was elected as Vice Chair of the Compliance Committee of the Barcelona Convention and its Protocols at the 18th Meeting of the Compliance Committee held from 29 to 30 June 2022 in Athens, Greece. He participated in the 9th Environment for Europe Ministerial Conference – Sustainable Infrastructure, Sustainable Tourism, Education for Sustainable Development (5-7 October 2022, Nicosia, Cyprus) as a key expert speaker in the Side Event “Environmental Governance for Transforming our Planet – Promoting the Aarhus Convention in the whole of the Mediterranean Region” (7 October 2022), co-organized by MEPIELAN Centre, where he presented the MEPIELAN study Overview of the Foundation Discussion Document for the Mediterranean Accession Agenda to the Aarhus Convention. On 30 December 2022, representing MEPIELAN Centre, Evangelos signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the MEPIELAN Centre and the European Public Law Organization (EPLO), represented by its Director Professor Spyridon Flogaitis to promote their cooperation in the field of scientific research, education, training and teaching.
Professor José Juste-Ruiz participated, as legal advisor for the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, at the fourth and fifth sessions of the Intergovernmental Conference on an international legally binding instrument on Marine Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UN Headquarters, New York, fourth session: from 7 to18 March 2022 and fifth session: from15 to 26 August, resumed from 20 February to 3 March 2023).
Professor Konstantinos Tsimonis was appointed as an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the Department of European & International Social & Political Studies, University College London. He also joined the editorial board of Global China Pulse, an online publication by the Made in China Journal. Konstantinos participated as a panelist in the 2023 Delphi Economic Forum, commenting on China’s position on the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Dr Marina Soilemezidou was awarded, in December 2022, the PhD Degree by the Department of International, European and Area Studies, Panteion University, Athens. Her thesis was entitled “International Governance of the Caspian Sea Legal Status: Political, Legal, Negotiating and Scientific Aspects”. On October, 2022, representing MEPIELAN Centre, Marina participated online in the International Scientific and Practical Conference “Russia in the UN Decade of Ocean Sciences” (Moscow, 24-28 October 2022) and made a presentation entitled “Participatory Governance for the Sustainable Development of the Caspian Sea regime” at the Round Table Session “Digital Twin of the Caspian Sea”.

MEPIELAN Centre is an international research, training and educational centre established by Professor Evangelos Raftopoulos at the Panteion University of Athens in 2008.
Before its establishment as a University Centre, MEPIELAN operated as a successful international research, training and informational programme (2002-2007) under the scientific direction of Professor Evangelos Raftopoulos and the aegis of the Panteion University of Athens, supported by the Mediterranean Action Plan/UNEP and the Greek Ministry of the Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works.
MEPIELAN Centre is an accredited UNEP/MAP PARTNER (since 2013), a Member of the Mediterranean Commission on Sustainable Development (MCSD) (since 2016), and a Member of the Steering Committee of the MCSD (since 2019).
On 22 May 2022, MEPIELAN Centre proceeded to the development of MEPIELAN as a Non- Profit Civil Organization (INGO) for the more effective and efficient advancement of its Goals and Missions and furtherance of its activities. MEPIELAN Centre as a Non- Profit Civil Organization (INGO) is registered in Greek Law (Hellenic Business Registry, Reg. No. 16477300100) in accordance with Laws 4072/2012 & 4919/2022 as applicable
