The WGRI was accredited to consider the progress in the implementation of the CBD, to review the impacts and effectiveness of existing processes under the Convention, and to consider ways and means of identifying and overcoming obstacles to the effective implementation of the Convention.
The topics that were discussed during the Meeting include : the progress that has been made towards the 2010 biodiversity target and the implementation of the Strategic Plan, as well as the possibility of revising and updating the Strategic Plan beyond 2010. Other recommendations address options for the multi-year programme of work of the Convention for the period 2011-2022 , technology transfer and cooperation, national reporting, review of guidance to the financial mechanism and policy options concerning innovative financial mechanisms, as well as the implementation of activities relating to mainstreaming biodiversity, development and poverty reduction.
The Third WGRI adopted 12 recommendations that will be submitted to the 10th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the CBD, including a revised Strategic Plan for the post 2010 period, which will enter into force when the financial issues and negotiations on access and benefit sharing are resolved.
